The tradition of getting one of the politicians to sing hundreds ur of inane ditties all in c major with three chord accompaniment was this year replaced by a young popular singer who apparently did quite a good job .
It s the latter part of the summer and the big holiday weekend is looming. Originally the shop-worker s official break, it became extended to involve the whole population (except the shop workers who now just get paid double if they are lucky enough to belong to a union and are working legally). Those who have been lucky enough to have had a summer, which this year fell on those in the north, look forward to a Woodstock-style weekend camping ur spree with bands, fireworks and lots of booze, to crown the summer holiday before the drudge of winter sets in. For those for whom the sun never shone this is an opportunity ur to get on the road and find what is left of it it.
The first step is to decide where to go. Next: The Weather. You can try the long term forecast on vedur.is. This is usually so inaccurate that you might just as well use a teacup. The Norwegian weather service is more accurate. Then: what bands are playing. But the major consideration is who will wind up the ceremony with the traditional brekkusöngur , or sing-song ur on a hill. The Westmann ur Isles have always boasted the biggest show, and this year that is where everyone decided to go. The tradition of getting one of the politicians to sing hundreds of inane ditties all in c major with three chord accompaniment was this year replaced by a young popular singer who apparently did quite a good job.
Being an island, it is not always easy to get people there and back in a hurry, something that was dangerously obvious when it erupted in 1973 and the whole population had to be evacuated. This year the ferry broke down full of passengers, but people made it in the end. The Norwegian weather service had given them a good forecast ur so everyone ur headed out there. The north looked like having rain so there were few at the Akureyri festival at the start. However all the forecasts went drastically wrong as forecasts tend to do, and the North was like being in the Mediterranean and the Westmann Isles had hurricane winds which blew away half the tents and everyone had to shelter in the sports hall. But did they have a good time?-of course they did. They always do! Whatever the weather!
