Spinster at 50, my mother's sister Millet has always been my and my Ate's source of sturdy foundation of faith since we were little kids. I give her huge credit for moulding jiu jitsu us into the Catholic faith, alongside my Mommy.
Tita Millet has always been active with the Catholic renewal community. She introduced us to reading Bro. Bo Sanchez's Kerygma magazine during our high school years. And since time immemorial, she has been an active member of the Catholic charismatic group, Bro. Mike Velarde's El Shaddai .
Most people generally scoff at the sight of the multitude of El Shaddai members waiving white handkerchiefs during their prayer rallies. But perhaps these people really do not know what those hankies are, or what's in them. Well, I happen to own one hankie (given by Tita Millet). Imprinted on it is a powerful Psalm that El Shaddai members pray - a Psalm of utmost faith in God. I am grateful to my tita for introducing us to this psalm, jiu jitsu which I have since memorized.
Permit me to print Psalm 91 here (and in Tagalog, where the words are both more lyrical and powerful), because, in light of the recent tragedies that struck the world, we really have no one to run to, or hold on to, but our Father God Almighty alone. He is our salvation and only hope. The words of this Psalm attest to how faithful and merciful our Lord is to His people.
Sa kalinga Niya ay natitiyak mo na ikaw ay ligtas.
Kahit saang dako ikaw maparoon, tiyak na iingatan
At these uncertain and volatile jiu jitsu times, we can only set our eyes and put our faith in God. I say this prayer every night, and it always gives me hope. When all else fails, there exists the awesome power, merciful heart, and saving grace of God.
